Headaches often seem like a simple ailment, but numerous different types exist, each with their own specific treatment needs. Some, like migraines and cluster headaches, can become chronic and severely damaging to quality of life if not properly addressed.

To truly understand headaches, we need to look at the human brain. This complex organism does not innately sense pain. Instead, the layers of tissue and muscle covering it, as well as the blood vessels traversing the skull, contain fibers sensitive to pain.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches, known as the most common type of headache, typically cause discomfort and a sensation of tightness around the forehead and back of the neck. They can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a full week.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are a rare but incredibly severe type of headache. The pain typically flares up around the same time each day and can peak within 5-10 minutes. It usually occurs over the eye or one temple but can spread to larger areas of the head.

Sinus Headaches

Often confused with migraines, sinus headaches accompany sinus infections and are accompanied by fever, stuffy nose, cough, congestion, and a sense of facial pressure.

Migraines

Migraines are the sixth most disabling condition globally. They occur in three stages: the prodrome phase, the headache phase, and the postdrome phase. Symptoms range from mood changes, food cravings, neck stiffness, increased thirst and urination, frequent yawning, severe, often unilateral headache, visual disturbances, difficulty speaking, tingling sensations, nausea, and dizziness.

For the majority of headaches, over-the-counter medication may work. However, recurrent headaches may require a different form of treatment.
